YMCA of Collier County Offers Hope and Support to Those in Marco Island Affected by Parkinson's Disease

August 2023 — The YMCA is proud to announce that, thanks to a $18,000 community grant from the Parkinson's Foundation, it is now able to provide Rock Steady Boxing, an innovative program for individuals with Parkinson's disease, free of charge.

“Community-based grants can empower leaders of meaningful Parkinson’s programs who both understand and are equipped to handle the local community’s most pressing needs,” said Parkinson’s Foundation President and CEO John L. Lehr. “These investments reflect the Foundation’s continued commitment to making a difference in the lives of people with PD from all walks of life.”

Parkinson’s disease affects millions of people around the world, robbing them of their ability to move and function normally. However, new research has shown that exercise, specifically targeted exercises like those used in the Rock Steady Boxing program, can have a significant impact on managing symptoms and helping those with Parkinson’s regain control of their bodies.

This groundbreaking approach combines boxing training with specialized exercises and has been proven to reverse, reduce, or delay the symptoms of Parkinson’s. The YMCA hopes to make this program available to all individuals struggling with Parkinson’s regardless of financial situation.

"We are thrilled to offer this unique program free of charge until the funds are fully utilized." said Reilly Smith, YMCA of Collier County Wellness Director. "The Rock Steady Boxing program can provide hope and support for those affected by Parkinson's Disease."

The program is currently available at the YMCA of Collier County’s South Campus location in Marco Island every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. All interested participants must register before attending classes. For more information or to register for classes please call 239-394-9622 or visit https://ymcacollier.org.
